Overview of graduate programs
For prospective graduate students
Founded in 1872, the university is a nationally recognized Carnegie Doctoral I institution and is the fourth largest public university in Ohio. It is located in a pleasant residential neighborhood of Toledo, a thriving Great Lakes port of 300,000. The Graduate School offers over 40 academic programs at the master's and doctoral levels. With about twenty five graduate faculty and forty full-time students at both the Master's and Ph.D. levels, the Mathematics Department features the close student-faculty contact and informal atmosphere of a small department while at the same time providing facilities and opportunities comparable to those at larger institutions.
Graduate programs
The Department offers the following graduate programs:
Doctoral Program
Doctoral degrees are offered with emphasis in pure and applied mathematics and in statistics. Doctoral students engage in research in a variety of specialties including algebra, harmonic analysis, differential geometry, dynamical systems and partial differential equations, optimal control, and statistics.
Master's Programs in Pure and Applied Mathematics
The Department offers Master of Arts (pure mathematics) and Master of Science (applied mathematics) degrees. Both programs are appropriate for students who wish to enter the doctoral program or who wish to pursue a teaching career at the junior college level. The latter program is particularly suited for students preparing for a career in industry and includes the option of an Industrial Mathematics track.
Master of Science in Mathematics Education
This program is offered jointly by the Department of Mathematics and the College of Education and Allied Professions. It is aimed primarily at currrent and prospective high school teachers.
Master's Program in Statistics
The Master of Science program in statistics emphasizes the applications of statistics, with a solid foundation in statistical theory. Applications center around several project-oriented courses and an emphasis on computing. Opportunities exist for statistical consulting involving other departments, including Pharmacy, Engineering, Law, Physiology, and also researchers at the nearby Medical College of Ohio.
Computing Facilities
The Department of Mathematics has a network based computing facility that is centered around two Sparc 10 servers and two Sun Ultra-Enterprise servers. This network is connected to a University wide network that offers other computers running Windows NT, Unix, VMS and CMS operating systems. The Department also has a graphics laboratory that includes an SG-Iris and SG-Indy that run AVS. Access to these devices and an array of software packages (including Maple and Matlab) is possible through PC's and X-terminals that are available in all faculty and graduate student offices. The department also has access to an instructional computing laboratory with about 40 PC's and a Barco Projector.
Library Facilities
The main research library of the University of Toledo is the William S. Carlson Library which houses over 1,600,000 volumes and over 3,000 periodicals. The library has a large and current collection of mathematical texts and monographs and subscribes to over 200 mathematical journals. The University of Toledo Libraries have a fully electronic catalog and circulation service that is available through any terminal on or off campus. The University Library network is connected to a statewide university library network, which makes available to students the collections of all other university and colleges libraries in the State of Ohio. Requests to these libraries can be filed electronically and are usually available within a few days. Also available through the Library network are numerous research databases such as ISI. It should also be noted that one of the major university research libraries in the United States is within an hour's drive at the University of Michigan.
Graduate Faculty
Financial Aid Opportunities
The Department offers teaching assistantships that provide full tuition and a stipend to students in all graduate programs except the M.S. Ed. program.
In Fall, 2003, stipends for students in the doctoral program will start at $13,000 per academic year and stipends for Master's students will be $10,000 per academic year. Additional summer support is generally available for assistants who request it.
